Project Description
A key flyover bridge on the inner ring road in Leeds city centre is to be re-built in a major £30m project starting in May 2020. Originally built in the late 1960s, the Regent Street Flyover is to be replaced with a new enhanced structure after suffering damage. The bridge has an estimated 43,000 vehicles passing over it every day while 30,000 vehicles pass below it on the A61. The work, which is scheduled to be completed in spring 2022, will involve overnight and weekend closures.

Key Project Insights
Regent Street scheme with estimated traffic counts of 60,000 vehicles per day, we have designed a progress-o-meter which has been installed roadside to inform road users of weekly progress in a % of the overall scheme completed, reducing road user frustration by delivering pro-active honest communication.

Innovative Temporary Barrier Solution
Because we were involved at an early stage with Early Contractor Involvement we managed to change the temporary barrier system to a solution that fitted the A64(M) Project better.

Key Challenges
After visiting the site to see exactly what was required, we quickly realised that they need more than the standard barrier at 800mm high. After an internal technical meeting we suggested using Multibloc + Multibloc F which was an added Fence Panel that was to same standard required, the fence panels are 2.6m high. This system is to be used during both contraflow phases, once the temporary barrier system is in place this allows Balfour Beatty to drop the complete bridge deck from the opposite carriageway. Adding the fence panels to the TVCB eliminates the risk of pedestrians or third party drivers sitting or climbing over the 800mm barrier and falling approx. 30ft onto the road below.
